By the time 'Coz I luv You' hit the number one position in the UK singles chart in november 1971, the bands seemingly overnight success had taken them five and a half years of hard slog and graft, plying and honing their trade in small clubs up and down the country, an experience that was to stand them in good stead in years to come.
Knocking Rod Stewart's seminal 'Maggie May' off the top of the chart was one thing, to retain the position for a month was a phenominal achievement for a track that was famously written in half an hour in Holder's mothers kitchen over a cup of coco, and was the start of a glorious song writing partnership between Holder and Lea, who now took over the writing for the band leaving Hill and Powell to bask in the reflected glory of some corking tunes.
'Coz I luv you' carried on the trend of having handclaps and stomping a plenty added to the final mix and began the famous mis spelling of their song titles with Holder's toilet wall English. The track was also a massive hit in Europe and the band were busily scuttling back and forth from Holland, Germany and scandinavian countries, plugging the track and building an impressive fan base in the process.
Slade had finally arrived, not quite the band that they were to become, but the hard work had paid dividends, bigger venues were being sought for upcoming tours, the fan club took off and photographs of the band littered the teeny girl magazines and the momentum surrounding the band gathered pace.
